Can You Call the Vet?

Can You Call the Vet?

by Barbara Ellin Fox

My daughter took care of a small boarding facility during Christmas, while its owners were out of town and a situation arose that  brought up the question, “What’s in your boarding contract.”

One of the horses had periodic seizures and she was instructed  that if it occurred she should put his food in his stall and check on him in an hour.  The barn owner said the seizures caused him to be down anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. … Continue Reading

Aside from having great videos and pictures AND being a fun blog to read, The Riding Instructor blog is  a good source for information for instructors, riders, students and their significant others.  Significant others could be a spouse or Mom and Dad.  The purpose of The Riding Instructor blog is to make  information available to you as if you have, or are,  the PERFECT riding instructor.

Riding instructors are not just the people who tell you how to post or how to ride a course of fences.  Your riding instructor should be able to tell you how to choose the perfect horse for your level, where to shop, how to enter or join activities and clubs, what to do with your sick horse until the vet arrives, and even how to clip.  If you’re the the Mom, Dad or Spouse of a horse addict, the Riding Instructor should be able to explain the activities in layman’s terms, advise you on the perfect birthday present, and provide an occasional shoulder to lean on.  … Continue Reading

Branding the Easy Way

Branding the Easy Way

by Barbara Ellin Fox

“Slug Bug, Red! No Slug Backs!” and I receive a “thump” on my shoulder.  My 4 1/2 year old granddaughter demonstrates the effects of  “branding”.

Branding is the process of turning something into an easily recognized, cohesive identity.  We recognize the branding a single item like the shape of a Volkswagen Beetle or Budweiser Beer with the Budweiser Clydesdales. The sight of a polo pony and rider with mallet in the air tells us we’re looking at the Ralph Lauren line of products.  A green four leaf clover with an H on each leaf identifies the “4H” member. Branding makes it possible to identify an object, a group, and association, or a member in an instant. … Continue Reading

4 Good Horse Blogs

by Barbara Ellin Fox

I’ve been looking for some good horse blogs to follow and have been surprised at how many  of the posts are months to a year old. Some even appear to be abandoned.  Even so, there is great information to be found in old posts.  I thought I’d share with you 4 good horse blogs that I’ve discovered.

Go barefoot. I love to let my horses go barefoot whenever I can.  I think it’s a good day anytime you don’t have to drive a nail into a hoof so … Continue Reading

Pony Club …Not for Everyone

Pony Club …Not for Everyone

by Barbara Ellin Fox

I love Pony Club. I’ve been involved on all sorts of levels for many years.  My children both grew up through Pony Club and I can’t wait for my granddaughter to be old enough to join, but Pony Club isn’t for everyone.  This is a tough statement for those of us who love Pony Club, but if you stick with it long enough, sooner or later you’ll agree.

Pony Club is a big commitment. The bigger a member’s commitment to Pony Club the more he or she will gain from the Pony Club experience. Pony Club members don’t sign up for membership alone.  For every child that joins there is a mom or dad, or both, who has to be willing to give up regular weekend days for Pony Club meetings.  Most clubs meet at least twice a month. … Continue Reading

Riding For A Lifetime

Riding For A Lifetime

by Barbara Ellin Fox Riding is different than most other sports. If a person is taught to ride correctly they can continue this sport for a lifetime. I’ve known many people who continue to ride in their 60s, 70s, and 80s and a few who have continued to ride in their 90s. That’s something that [...]
