Safety With Horses is Promoted by Saddle Up SAFELY
Safety with horses is a prime consideration for all riding instructors, especially those who work with beginners. I’m excited to share this good safety with horses website with you.
Promoting Safety with Horses
Saddle Up Safely is an organization that promotes safety with horses both during riding and on the ground. It’s a community effort spearheaded by the University of Kentucky and sponsored by 4 dozen industry leaders.
Part of the website is devoted to safety tips, divided by categories. Some tips are sent to Saddle Up Safely by readers. You could help by suggesting a safety tip.
Printables for Handouts
Another part, Expert Advice is a series of short printable pdfs. Your students will like the one titled Picking Out a Good Horse.
The Publications page has 8 attractive pdf booklets that you or your students can download. They cover a range of safety topics including Horseback Riding Safety, Safety in the Pasture and Barn Safety.
Safe Return to Riding will interest riders who are getting back in the saddle after recuperating from an accident. It will also interest riders returning after time off to raise a family. This booklet gives advice about getting back in the and staying safe. There is also an informative chart that shows how many calories you burn per hour for different activities.
Another booklet, Travel to a New Environment talks about horse behavior and fear. It gives helpful tips for getting your horse used to unusual stimuli. It also addresses a very common concern—keeping your horse hydrated. The booklet covers many topics that are important toward successful traveling with your horse. And check out Trailering Your Horse Safely which covers everything from choosing a trailer, loading, maintenance, to commercial haulers.
Quizzes for Students
The Safety Quizzes section is a series of multiple choice online quizzes covering the topics in the pdf booklets. Instructors could use these quizzes as further education activities for students between lessons.
Because they have done a great job promoting safety with horses, Saddle Up Safely gets the Riding Instructor’s seal of approval. Check them out and pass the word to your students, too.
Here’s to safety with horses.
